Illiana Skywarn is a self governed independent net with many close relations and friends. We normally operate on the WVARA 146.685MHz 2M repeater (PL of 151.4Hz) with the backup system of the K9HX repeater or 145.230MHz 2M repeater. If a weather condition exists the courtesy tone will be changed to a "W" in Morse code, when the weather gets really serious the PL tone will be removed as well. In the event that the repeater goes off the air all stations will switch to 146.685MHz simplex until another repeater or frequency can be designated as the new frequency of operations. Illiana Skywarn works with the Central Indiana Skywarn Net and the Indianapolis, Indiana National Weather Service office via the 444.350(+) W9SKI Illiana Skywarn repeater linked to the 146.970Mhz(-) repeater in Indianapolis. Additionally we try to work with the Lincoln, Illinois National Weather Service office for those reports from Illinois.

All amateur radio operators are strongly encouraged to take the Weather Spotters class, given by the NWS and sponsered by the WVARA every Winter/Spring. You do not need be to a certified spotter to report to the net but it is preferred. If you have taken the class it will help you properly identify what you are seeing so you can more acurately report it.

Spotters are encouraged to take a digital or regular camera with them as well. Should you see something we would like to have a picture for our gallery on this website and for future training materials.

Weather spotters in the affected area should be as watchful as possible, but should not compromise their own personal safety or that of their family!
